On our trip to the island of Alicudi we spent on day and night in Palermo, which we unexpectedly really enjoyed.

The city feels very authentic. There are a mix of different cultures and not yet massively overrun by tourists.

We found a great bed and breakfast in a nice neighborhood. All of the rooms have views of the harbor.

On our walk through the small streets of the city we came across a shop selling brooms, baskets, ropes etc. But they also sold unique handmade bags, which we both bought one of.

Alessandro Paternostro in the Kalsa neighborhood.

Palermo market culture

Palermo has a rich market culture. Throughout the city you will find both small and large markets. One of the nicest we fond was in the Albergheria neighborhood

Mondello Beach

Palermo is a city by the sea. With an old fashioned beach town half an hour away (by bus) from the city center (806 from Piazza Sturzo).

You cannot expect much peace and quiet here since you amerce yourself in a typical Sicilian noisy scene with families that have probably been coming here their entire lives.

And all this on just a few square meters. This does not seem to bother anyone though since they all seem to be having a good time.

Albergheria

Albergheria not only has a nice market but is also a fascinating part of the city.

It is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Palermo and is also the most cultural.

The shops, cafes and various other businesses found there could make you think that you are anywhere besides in Italy.
